Every year, more than 5 billion blood counts are performed worldwide — yet roughly 84% that need a closer look under the microscope never get one. Behind that gap are real people, across the UK, EU, and US alike.
Diagnosing Blood Disorders
The UK picture
Roughly 1 in 4 leukaemia patients in England face an avoidable delay in diagnosis. For acute myeloid leukaemia, one-year mortality is 67% for patients diagnosed in an emergency setting, versus 48% for those diagnosed through planned routes. Anemia disproportionately affects women: around 1 in 3 UK women show signs of iron deficiency, rising to over 1 in 3 in women aged 18–49.
The EU picture
Leukemia incidence across EU countries reaches roughly 18–20 new cases per 100,000 people annually in the highest-incidence countries, and AML prevalence in the EU has nearly doubled since 1990. Anemia in women remains a widespread, under-diagnosed issue too — Europe fares better than the global average of roughly 1 in 3 women affected, but the burden is still substantial.
The US picture
Leukemia affects roughly 1 in 60 people over a lifetime in the US, with over 560,000 people currently living with the disease. Diagnostic delay is a recognized issue here too, particularly in children and young adults. Anemia in American women aged 20–59 has risen to 14% as of 2023, up from under 8% in 2000.
What delayed diagnosis costs
Beyond the direct health risk, delay carries real everyday costs. Anemia often shows up first as persistent tiredness, poor concentration, and reduced performance at work or school — easy to dismiss, but a real drag on quality of life long before a diagnosis is made. For leukemia, delays in the UK alone are estimated to cost the NHS £1.7 million in avoidable care per year in AML alone — a pattern that repeats across health systems and insurers wherever diagnosis is delayed.

What we’ve built
In under two minutes, AIMA Labs delivers a full white cell differential, red cell morphology grading, and platelet estimation — flagging indicators across leukemia subtypes and anemia patterns for expert review. On held-out test data, our models average an F1 score of 97% across blood cell classes.
Giving time back to the lab
Manual review takes 10–20 minutes per smear. AIMA Labs cuts that to under 2 minutes — freeing up roughly 8 minutes of technician time per smear, or an estimated 3–7 full-time-equivalent technician hours per 100,000 blood counts processed.
Where we are today
We’re running clinical validation studies against expert morphologists and established analysers, with work underway in Greece and further studies planned in Cyprus, alongside NHS and NIHR engagement in the UK.
